Wimbledon Athletics is proud to partner with North Andrew School District to provide cardiovascular testing on school grounds Thursday, March 15th (appts. run 8AM to 1:30PM) for athletes and students between the ages of 12 and 25 who participate in sports and high-endurance activities (like marching band, cheer, and dance). Ensuring young athletes and their families are made aware of any underlying issues as early as possible is very important to us.

Tests include EKGs and echocardiograms to detect heart abnormalities that can cause sudden cardiac arrest and non-invasive vascular ultrasound to identify vascular conditions common to athletes (such as blood clots). Qualified sonographers (techs) perform the tests professionally and maintain the privacy of each student. Board certified reading cardiologists, pediatric cardiologists, and radiologists interpret test results and report detailed findings. If anything significant is identified, the parent/guardian will be notified immediately!

IMPORTANT: Students should wear baggy shorts and, for the females, a sports bra to the testing!

WHAT IS SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST?

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is caused by an abnormality in the heart’s electrical system or structure that abruptly stops the heartbeat—and it’s fatal in 95% of the cases. Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death on school campuses. The American Heart Association reports that every 3 days in the U.S., a young athlete dies from sudden cardiac arrest. The threat is real.

For 80% of kids, sudden cardiac arrest will be the first sign something is wrong. The majority simply do not experience any symptoms indicating a heart problem. Others believe shortness of breath or dizziness is caused by exertion—not a heart condition. Published studies estimate that pre-participation screening (history and physical exam) only catches 3-15% of cardiac problems!

WHAT IS THE COST OF THE TESTING?

There are no upfront costs for the testing. Wimbledon Health Partners will bill your health insurance for the services provided, accepting what your carrier deems usual and customary (we do not balance bill!). As required by law, WHP will bill for the deductible or co-insurance, if applicable. If a balance is due, WHP can offer a payment plan or can eliminate the balance entirely for those in genuine hardship situations. There are a number of circumstances that could qualify you for a waiver, including saving for college. Click Here for a Waiver of Financial Responsibility

Please be aware that if you have a Health Savings Account (HSA), Flexible Spending Account (FSA), or Health Reimbursement Account (HRA), funds may be deducted automatically if a balance is due, even if a waiver has been submitted. Please check with your insurance carrier, as each policy is different.

We encourage you to call WHP Customer Relations at (855) 200-8262 to verify your health benefits prior to testing. If you do not have health insurance, please call us to discuss options. Our priority is the health and safety of your child!

HOW DO I PREPARE MY CHILD FOR THE TESTING?

  • Students should wear baggy shorts for the testing and, for the females, a sports bra (no underwire)
  • Students should not use lotions, bath oils, or creams prior to testing
  • Students should avoid tobacco and caffeine two hours before testing begins
  • Students should not take anti-inflammatory medications at least 4-6 hours prior to testing
  • Please allow for the proper amount of time needed: testing can take 1 to 1.5 hours to complete

IMPORTANT: Please submit registration paperwork as soon as possible. We need a signed consent form on file to test students under the legal age.

WHAT HAPPENS POST TESTING?

Approximately 14 to 21 business days following testing, WHP will email the parent/guardian on file with instructions for retrieving test results. A separate email will come from Studycast with a private, secure link to the results. If you do not receive the Studycast email right away, please check your Spam/Junk folder.

IMPORTANT: Please note that the policyholder will likely receive multiple Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) from the insurance carrier as the claims move through the billing cycle. These are not bills – they do not accurately reflect what your insurance carrier has paid nor what you owe. The administration of the tests (by WHP techs) and the reading of test results (by WHP physicians) are two different services and will be reflected in separate EOBs for multiple companies.
